The junco can be hard to spot on the driveway stones, just like the coming of winter can be hard to spot among the warm days of October. But a bit of movement out of the corner of my eye can be a clue that Fall is turning inevitably into something else.
At first there is one, then three more, then a flock on the lawn. The juncos, with snow white breasts, know what is coming.
