I was at a craft fair last fall with (among other things) some folded-fabric–often called “quilted”–ornaments that I’d made. Some examples:
A lady stopped at my table, looked at the ornaments, and with a harrumph and a sniff said, “I learned to make those years ago”–and stalked off.
Her basic point, if rather inelegantly made, is correct of course…as the source for the designs above, The Ornament Girl, has written,

My own version of that old-fashioned craft is the Basic Star Pattern. I gave it this name as a way to set it apart from the old craft form. I did this because I have my own personal methods & techniques for making them, and my own spin on creating the design…
So, yes, you can make pine cones, trees, and basic star-type ornaments with the techniques from years ago. But you can also learn some new techniques that yield really striking results, like this lovely Easter egg I made:
